1.1 This guide was developed by the ASTM A04.12 Pipe and Tubes Subcommittee to address the request for specialty coatings applied to cast iron soil pipe and fittings. This guide can be included in the design professionals’ specifications when these specialty coatings are desired.
1.1.1 Cast iron soil pipe and fittings manufactured in accordance with Specification A888, Specification A74, and Cast Iron Soil Pipe Institute CISPI 301 are used for drain, waste, and vent (DWV) sanitary and storm water systems installed above and below ground.
1.1.2 This guide applies to coatings applied to cast iron soil pipe and fittings designed for non-pressure, gravity flow systems. It does not address dimensional, mechanical or chemical properties of the cast iron. This information can be found in Specifications A48/A48M, A74, A888, and CISPI 301.
1.1.3 Cast iron soil pipe and fittings with standard asphaltic coatings have a proven track record of use in drain, waste, and vent (DWV) gravity flow systems. Sometimes, specialty coatings are desired for additional protection from more aggressive or low flow drain, waste, and vent (DWV) applications.
1.1.4 This guide purports to address the performance requirements of specialty coatings and some of the proven test methods which pertain to coating performance. As well as the acceptable ranges a coating must conform to meet the performance requirements.
1.2 Units—The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.
