1.1 This guide applies to the collection of representative samples of in-service lubricating oils and hydraulic fluids used in industrial applications to support an effective condition monitoring program.
1.2 Two primary reasons for in-service sampling of lubricating oils and hydraulic fluids in industrial applications are to monitor the fluid’s ability to perform the expected design functions and to detect early stages of specific developing failure modes.
1.3 Although several factors determine the effectiveness of the condition monitoring program, the most critical is selecting the sampling port location.
1.4 When selecting the location of the sampling port in industrial applications, it is essential to thoroughly analyze the system’s design, the effects of fluid degradation, and potential failure modes. This approach ensures that the most relevant information is captured at the chosen location.
1.5 The values stated in SI units are regarded as standard.
1.5.1 The values given in parentheses are for information only.
1.6 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.7 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
