DESCRIPTION

1.1 This standard provides guidance for inspection, maintenance and service for permanently installed indoor gymnasium equipment including ceiling suspended and wall mounted basketball backstops, ceiling suspended volleyball systems, gymnasium divider curtains, and wrestling mat lifting and storage systems. This standard only addresses specifically listed items. There may be other types of equipment installed in gymnasiums that are not covered by the standard.

1.2 Unlike a specification that dictates specific criteria and tolerances, this guide offers a broad perspective of considerations for inspection, maintenance, and service for permanently installed indoor gymnasium equipment to aid in improved safety and performance.

1.3 This guide is intended to reduce the potential hazards resulting from a mechanical failure of permanently installed indoor gymnasium equipment including ceiling suspended and wall mounted basketball backstops, ceiling suspended volleyball systems, gymnasium divider curtains and wrestling mat lifting and storage systems.

1.4 Permanently installed gymnasium equipment discussed in this standard are mechanical devices and require periodic inspection, maintenance, and service to ensure continued safe operation. Failure to provide such attention may result in malfunctions that may result in property damage or personal bodily harm.

1.5 This standard only addresses mechanical features and functionality of listed products. It does not purport to address other properties and conditions such as electrical, flammability or similar requirements that are addressed by other standards, codes or local law.

1.6 Units—The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.

1.7 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

1.8 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
