1.1 This specification covers requirements, test methods, materials, and marking for polypropylene (PP) buried crate systems used for collection, detention, and retention of stormwater runoff. Applications include commercial, municipal, and residential drainage, including installation under parking lots and roadways.
1.2 Crate systems are produced from a series of interconnecting and stacked cube shaped boxes. The boxes can either be factory assembled or assembled on site from components. The boxes are intended to be used as an element in a modular system. They can be installed as one or multiple horizontal and/or vertical layers. The systems are installed on a firm foundation, as defined by the manufacturer, and backfilled around the sides and over the top of the system using a select backfill material.
1.3 Analysis and experience have shown that the successful performance of this product depends upon the type and depth of bedding and backfill, and care in installation in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. These recommendations shall include soil classifications, required compaction densities, minimum embedment zones and any special construction procedures and restrictions for proper installation of the system. This specification requires for the manufacturer to provide crate system installation instructions to the purchaser.
1.4 Values stated in inch-pounds units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard.
1.5 This standard does not purport to address water quality issues or hydraulic performance requirements associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user to ensure that appropriate engineering analysis is performed to evaluate the water quality issues and hydraulic performance requirements for each installation.
1.6 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.7 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
