1.1 This guide covers the detection, collection, handling, and preservation of trace evidence in the laboratory. It is intended to assist forensic science practitioners in the selection and application of techniques based on the circumstances of each case. Although the bulk of the procedures and steps included in this guide are applicable in the laboratory settings, certain aspects of trace evidence detection, collection, handling, and preservation can be applicable in the field (for example, crime scene).

1.2 Some specialized types of trace evidence, such as soil (refer to Guide E3272), lubricants, lachrymators, fire debris, gunshot residue (refer to Practice E3307) and explosives, have special considerations for collection that are outside the scope of this guide.
